The Pilates Method

pebblesPilates is a system of physical and mental conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates.

As a child Pilates sufferred from numerous ailments. Determined to overcome them, he studied various forms of physical exercise, including yoga, boxing, gymnastics and martial arts. From his studies and experience, he developed the Pilates Method which he outlined in his book Return To Life Through Contrology. His book also discusses the principles of Pilates: control, concentration, core, precision, alignment and breathing.

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.

In the late 1920’s, Pilates moved to the United States. He met his future wife, Clara on the voyage by boat. They set up their first studio in New York, and their clients included gymnasts, athletes and dancers. Pilates' ability to return dancers to the stage after back and other injuries gained him an excellent reputation in the dance industry.

By the time of his death in 1967 numerous studios based on his Method had opened, and his wife continued to run the studio until her death in 1977. Some of Pilates' original students, including Romana Kryzanowska continue to spread his work throughout the world.

During his career, Pilates developed a repertoire of hundreds of exercises on various pieces of equipment, including the reformer, wunda chair and cadillac.

Modern pilates is taught to people of all ages and abilities, and to those requiring rehabilitation. Benefits include improved body awareness, core strength, flexibility and posture. The first pilates studio in the southern hemisphere opened in Sydney in 1986.
